San Diego High School Basketball : Serra Hangs On to Beat Sweetwater, 56-54
Conrad Jones scored 16 points and Dexter Springall added 14 as Serra High defeated Sweetwater, 56-54, in the Mount Helix round-robin basketball tournament Wednesday at Helix High.
Sweetwater outscored Serra, 20-13, in the final quarter. Chris Starnes had 13 of his 20 points for Sweetwater in the fourth quarter.
The game was both teams’ season opener.
In other Mount Helix tournament games:
Doug Carter scored 16 points and had 9 rebounds to lead St. Augustine to a 54-22 win over Mount Miguel, and Helix defeated Orange Glen, 82-61.
Carter scored six points in the first quarter as St. Augustine took a 16-2 lead. Tony Stanich added 13 points and John Russel had 10 for St. Augustine.
In the Foothiller tournament, Grossmont defeated Christian, 85-55; University City beat El Cajon Valley, 99-55, and Santana defeated Mira Mesa, 76-84.
In the Santana girls’ tournament, Laura Hughes, two-time all-Palomar League first-team player, scored 36 points to lead Orange Glen to a 63-49 win at Santana High. Kelly Duschek added 13 points for Orange Glen.
In other Santana tournament games, Poway defeated El Cajon Valley, 70-27 and Santana defeated Serra 77-43.
