Community College Basketball Roundup : Sammon, Green Lead Cypress Past Sequoias
Jim Sammon scored 16 points and teammate Jeff Green added 15 Wednesday night as Cypress College defeated College of the Sequoias, 68-60, in the first round of the Antelope Valley men’s basketball tournament.
Karl Becker scored 11 and John Vranes 10 for Cypress, which has opened the season with six consecutive victories. Cypress trailed, 27-25, at the half.
In another Antelope Valley tournament game:
Palomar 70, Golden West 61--Mike Westley scored 25 and Kenny Williams 19 to lead Palomar to a first-round victory.
Elbert Davis scored 13 and Jim Stewart 19 for Golden West (4-1).
In nonconference womens’ basketball:
Golden West 105, San Diego Mesa 71--Kathy Werth, a sophomore forward, scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Rustlers (4-1) at home. Allyson Jenkins added 15 points and 8 rebounds for Golden West. Five Golden West players scored in double figures. Carolyn Willis had 17 points to lead San Diego Mesa (2-3). Golden West led, 51-26, at halftime.
