PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Rolling Hills 65, South Torrance 61--Junior forward John Hardy scored a game-high 21 points and Charlie Abbott hit four free throws in the final 32 seconds to lift the Titans (1-1) in the Pacific Shores consolation quarterfinals at Mira Costa.
Rolling Hills led by 15 at half time, but South came back to take a 56-55 lead with 2:30 remaining. The Titans then scored eight unanswered points to take the lead for good. Sophomore guard Steve Closcoeds 17 points for Rolling Hills.
South (0-2) was led by guard Larry Modena with 20 points, including five 3-point shots.
Inglewood 61, Bishop Montgomery 59--Inglewood advanced to tonight’s semifinals with a 61-59 victory over Bishop Montgomery. Junior forward Harold Miner hit a 17-foot jumper with 42 seconds left to break a 57-57 tie. When Bishop Montgomery (1-1) missed a three-point attempt, Miner got the rebound, was fouled and hit two free throws with four seconds left to clinch the game. Bishop Montgomery scored at the buzzer for the final points. Miner led Inglewood with 16 points, followed by Bobby Sears with 13. Bishop’s Mike Campbell led all scorers with 23 off the bench, including three 3-pointers.
Chadwick 53. Mira Costa 51--Chadwick (1-1) advanced in the consolation bracket in overtime, against Mira Costa (0-2) thanks to Charlton Jackson. The Dolphins senior scored 27 points including a three-point shot with 20 second left in regulation to send the game into overtime, then hit three free throws as Chadwick outscored the Mustangs, 6-2.
Palos Verdes 68, Culver City 49--Senior Mike Matteoni scored 23 points and guard John Mika added 16 points for Palos Verdes (2-0) as the Sea Kings defeated Culver City, 68-69, in a Pacific Shores tournament quarterfinal at Redondo High.
Phil Rochelle’s hot shooting in the second half helped bring Culver City (1-1) to within three points in the fourth quarter, but Palos Verdes was able to penetrate the Centaurs’ press to pull away for the win.
San Pedro 87, North Torrance 72--In a consolation quarterfinal, Willie Sanchez scored 22 points and Kevin Thompson added 20 to lead San Pedro to an 87-72 win over North. Senior Albert Hanneman led North with 19 points and Anthony Anetema scored 13.
Redondo 70, El Segundo 44--In the other quarterfinal at Redondo, Redondo downed El Segundo 70-44. Jaysen Surber led the Seahawks with 19 points and Jeremy Argo scored 16 for El Segundo.
Girls
Inglewood 42, Centennial 32--Inglewood got 14 points from Rhonda Jackson and 12 from Charlotte Griffin and led from the start Thursday in defeating Centennial in a non-league game at Inglewood. The Sentinels led at the half, 22-11, and were never seriously challenged after intermission. The victory made the Sentinels 1-1 going into tonight’s game against Long Beach Poly in the opening round of the Artesia Tournament.
San Pedro 44, Rolling Hills 36--At Rolling Hills senior guard Maria Louros scored 8 points and passed out 8 assists and junior forward Deanna Crouch had 8 points and 10 rebounds to lead the balanced Pirates in a non-league game. San Pedro improved to 1-1 while Rolling Hills fell to 0-2.
