Finland’s Matti Nykanen, who has dominated the World Cup ski jumping circuit in recent years, won the 70-meter event in the opening meet of the 1987-88 season at Thunder Bay, Canada.
Nykanen posted the only two jumps of more than 90 meters. His leaps of 95.5 and 94.5 meters gave him a total of 250.2 points, well ahead of runner-up Pavel Ploc of Czechoslovakia at 227.2 and third-place Ernst Vettori of Austria at 220.9.
Mike Holland was the top U.S. finisher. He tied for ninth with 210.4 points on jumps of 83.5 and 86 meters.
