College Basketball Roundup : Benched Smart Plays a Key Role in Indiana Win Over Vanderbilt

Indiana’s Keith Smart was hurt over being removed from the Hoosiers’ starting lineup, so he made Vanderbilt feel the pain.

Smart, benched for his performance in Saturday’s overtime loss to then-No. 2 Kentucky, made two key baskets in the final minutes to help the No. 6-ranked Hoosiers defeat Vanderbilt, 63-61, Tuesday night at Bloomington, Ind.

He made a 10-foot jumper to put the Hoosiers (3-1) ahead, 60-59, with 2:57 to play. And a baseline shot by Smart with 1:11 to play gave Indiana a 62-59 lead.

Smart didn’t enter the game until there was 10:30 left to play.

Vanderbilt, which upset then-top ranked North Carolina on Saturday, fought back from a 16-point first-half deficit to take its only lead of the game at 59-58 on two free throws by Barry Goheen with 4:48 left. Will Perdue, who finished with 27 points, sparked the comeback, scoring 15 in the second half.

Vanderbilt (3-1) committed 18 turnovers, twice as many as Indiana.

Rick Calloway led Indiana with 19 points. Magnus Pelkowski came off the bench with 16:12 left in the first half and made 7 of 11 shots, all before halftime, to score a career-high 15 points.

Notre Dame 74, Boston U. 49--David Rivers scored 19 points as a sluggish offense by the 19th-ranked Irish came alive in the second half to beat the Terriers at South Bend, Ind.

Arizona 77, No. Arizona 59--Sean Elliott led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points, including two three-pointers in the final eight minutes, as the No. 4-ranked Wildcats (6-0) defeated the Lumberjacks (0-5) at Tucson.

Nevada Las Vegas 98, Nevada Reno 96--Gerald Paddio scored 30 points, including the go-ahead free throw with 48 seconds left in the second overtime, to give the 17th-ranked Runnin’ Rebels a victory over the Wolf Pack at Reno.

Byron Strachan, who led the Wolf Pack with 21 points, had a chance to tie the score with five seconds left in the second overtime but missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity.

Clint Rossum scored seven points in the second overtime to spark the Rebels (4-0). The Wolf Pack fell to 1-2.

SW Missouri St. 82, Kansas St. 80--Clay Holt made 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth overtime as the Bears (3-2) upset the previously unbeaten Wildcats (5-1) at Lawrence, Kan.

Iowa St. 99, Arizona St. 85--Elmer Robinson scored a career-high 26 points, including four three-point goals, to lead the Cyclones (6-1) over the Sun Devils (3-2) at Ames, Iowa.

Lamar 75, Oregon 53--Sophomore forward Anthony Bledsoe scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Cardinals (3-1) to victory over the Ducks (2-2) at Beaumont, Tex.

Missouri 76, Drake 74--Derrick Chievous scored 24 points, including a spinning jump shot with 1:05 to play, as the No. 9-ranked Tigers (3-0) rallied, then held on to beat the Bulldogs (1-3) at Des Moines.
