The tense final game in the World Chess Championship, which Gary Kasparov has to win to retain his title, was adjourned today after 41 moves. Play will resume Saturday afternoon.

Challenger Anatoly Karpov leads the 24-game series by a score of 12-11 and needs only a draw when play resumes on Saturday to regain the title he held for the decade 1975-85. Karpov scored a dramatic upset victory Thursday in the next-to-last game.
