The National Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s executive committee agreed to hear an appeal at noon today from Miami Hurricane linebacker George Mira Jr., who was declared ineligible for the Orange Bowl because he tested positive for diuretics use.

The executive committee will hear Mira’s appeal on the basis of a provision in the drug testing legislation that allows exceptions to be granted “for those student-athletes with a documented medical history demonstrating the need for regular use of such a drug,” said NCAA spokesman Jim Marchiony.

A decision has not been made on whether the NCAA’s drug testing subcommittee will hear a second appeal from Mira and from offensive tackle John O’Neill, who also tested positive for diuretics use. O’Neill did not appeal to the Executive Committee.

Mira, the leading tackler in Miami history, and O’Neill were suspended last week after they failed NCAA-administered drug tests. Both tested positive for diuretics, a drug used to treat high blood pressure and increase the flow of fluids from the body. They also are used to hide the presence of steroids.
