High School Basketball : Taft Routs Locke to Finish 3rd

Four Taft players scored in double figures as the Toreadors defeated Locke, 79-55, to finish in third place in the Eagle Rock tournament Wednesday night.

Forward Tony Moten and guard Quincy Watts, who both scored 17 points for Taft, were selected to the all-tournament team. Lamont Koonce scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Dedan Thomas added 14 points and eight assists.

University defeated Taft, 74-66, Tuesday to spoil the Toreadors’ bid for a berth in the championship game.

Taft (8-2) pulled ahead early against Locke and led at halftime, 38-24. The Toreadors ran away with the game in the second half, outscoring Locke, 41-31.

“It was never really a contest. We just dominated them,” Taft Coach Jim Woodard said. “They didn’t really score much until the last quarter.”

Taft was 3-1 in the tournament.

Faith Baptist 78, St. Genevieve 48--Junior center Jason Henderson scored 23 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, including 15 in the final quarter as Faith Baptist won the championship of the Village Christian tournament. Forward Rich Leon added 17 points for Faith Baptist.

The Contenders led, 29-22, at halftime, but St. Genevieve pulled within three points two minutes into the third quarter behind a press defense that forced a series of turnovers. Forward Paul Walker paced the Valiants with 21 points.

Westlake 70, Camarillo 67 (OT)--Center Kurt Schwan banked in a 45-foot shot at the buzzer in overtime to give Westlake (7-5) the consolation title at the Ventura tournament.

A jump shot by forward Tom Carrillo, who led Camarillo (5-5) with 25 points, gave the Scorpions a 67-65 lead in overtime, but Westlake forward Kevin Logan tied the score on two free throws with 13 seconds to play.

Schwan then rebounded a missed shot with eight seconds left, dribbled to just past midcourt and let fly as the horn sounded.

Logan paced Westlake with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Schwan added 22 points.

GIRLS

Alemany 48, La Habra 42--Carol Schoenmann scored 11 points and Sylvia Castaneda added 10 to lead Alemany to a fifth-place finish in the Gahr tournament.

Michelle Paul, who scored nine points and led Alemany (9-3) in rebounding with 13, grabbed six offensive rebounds in the first half to help the Indians to a 23-21 lead.

Robin Seabrook scored a game-high 22 points for La Habra. Castaneda was Alemany’s only player named to the all-tournament team.
