Japanese semiconductor companies boosted their share of the worldwide chip market to 48% in 1987 as they led an industrywide resurgence. North American companies, most of them in the United States, captured 39% of the world market, according to a report by the market research firm Dataquest Inc. The top five companies in North America are Motorola, Texas Instruments, Intel, National Semiconductor and Advanced Micro Devices. NEC of Japan remained No. 1 in the world in chip sales for the third year in a row, with revenue exceeding $3 billion in 1987, followed by Toshiba and Hitachi.
