U.S., Soviets Cooperate in Gulf
MANAMA, Bahrain — U.S. and Soviet warships participated in the location and destruction of a mine in the Persian Gulf, raising the possibility of greater cooperation in protecting merchant shipping in the vital waterway, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said today.
Specter told reporters in Bahrain that a Soviet minesweeper was escorting a ship Jan. 5 when it spotted the mine. It shephered the vessel past the mine, probably planted by Iran, then turned back and coordinated a night search with two helicopters from the guided missile cruiser Richmond K. Turner and destroyed the mine after the copters spotted it.
