Austria’s Bernhard Gstrein, who had never finished better than fourth in a World Cup slalom, upset Italian Alberto Tomba, winner of the first three slaloms this season, at Lienz, Austria.

Tomba’s 20 points for second place enabled him to increase his overall World Cup lead to 156 points. Tomba trailed Gstrein by only one-hundredth of a second in the first run. Third was Sweden’s 1985 world slalom champion, Jonas Nilsson in 1:35.48.

Another prominent Swede, Ingemar Stenmark, who was 11th after the first run, dropped out in the second heat.
