Utah’s Butters Batters USD in 77-68 Victory
The University of San Diego couldn’t overcome the perfect shooting of guard Gina Butters as the Toreros were defeated, 77-68, by Utah Monday night in a nonconference women’s basketball game at the USD Sports Center.
Butters was 7 of 7 from the field, including 5 of 5 from three-point range, and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. Butters led all scorers with 24 points. Jane Gilpin and Candida Echeverria scored 19 points each and Karen Skemp added 11 for USD (6-9). Utah (10-6) shot 67.5% from the floor (27 of 40). USD shot 39.1% (25 of 64).
The Toreros trailed, 37-25, at halftime, but rallied to tie the score, 40-40, early in the second half. USD kept pace for a while, but with the score tied, 57-57, Utah pulled away.
