Barking Dog Credited With Saving 3 in Fire

SALEM, Ill. — A family dog was credited Friday with saving three people from a blazing mobile home south of Salem, firefighters said.
Assistant Fire Chief Jim Somer said the dog, “a small, curly, silvery-gray mutt,” jumped on a bed where the mobile home owner, Carolyn Whitham, was asleep early Friday and began barking.
The barking aroused Whitham, who awakened another woman and a teen-ager and the three fled through a back door with the dog, Somer said.
