Women’s College Basketball : Long Beach Shuts Down Titans, 83-48
Cal State Long Beach held Cal State Fullerton to just one field goal in the first half en route to an 83-48 rout Saturday in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game at Fullerton.
Shannon Smith scored 14 points to lead the 49ers, who earned their 20th straight victory over the Titans.
Fullerton’s Sheryl Jones hit a jumper for the game’s first basket, but after that the Titans got only nine free throws as Long Beach took a 40-11 halftime lead. Fullerton shot 1 of 15 in the first half (6.7%).
Freshman center Gena Miller led Fullerton with 10 points, 6 blocked shots and a career-high 17 rebounds.
The Titans (11-7, 6-3) outrebounded Long Beach, 42-35, but shot only 25.5% for the game. Long Beach shot 56.5%.
Carol Brandt (12 points), Penny Toler (11 points, 6 steals) and Dana Wilkerson (10 points) helped Long Beach (10-5, 7-0).
In another PCAA game:
UC Irvine 84, San Jose State 59--Cheryl Eiland scored a season-high 16 points and Mickey Skieresz had a career-high 14 points to lead the Anteaters (7-10, 5-4) at San Jose. Irvine shot 65% in the game. Pam McNeils led San Jose (1-18, 0-10) with 22 points.
In a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game:
Chapman 78, UC Riverside 75 (OT)--Karan Polk scored 22 points, Kim Rieff added 15 and Corine Sandfry 14 points to lead the Panthers (11-6, 2-2) at Riverside. Polk hit a pair of free throws for a 68-65 lead with 12 seconds to go, but the Highlanders’ Marissa Corrales made a layup and a free throw with eight seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In a Golden State Athletic Conference game:
Fresno Pacific 92, Southern California College 60--Gail Brown scored 16 points, Paula Hale 13 and Mary Sullivan 11 to lead the Vanguards (9-9, 0-5) at Costa Mesa.
