PCAA Roundup : Utah St. Can’t Stop Berry but Beats San Jose, 114-85

Kevin Nixon scored 22 points, and Utah State tightened its hold on second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Saturday night with a 114-85 victory over San Jose State at Logan, Utah.

The Aggies (12-6 overall, 7-2 in the PCAA) took to a 55-39 halftime lead, and the Spartans never threatened in the second half.

Ricky Berry scored 29 points and set a school career scoring record for San Jose (9-8, 5-4). He has 1,519 career points, eclipsing Stu Inman, who scored 1,503 in 1947-50.

Utah State made 11 of 14 from three-point range, including 8 of 10 in the first half. The 11 three-pointers set a school record.

Reid Newey scored 19 points for Utah State, Greg Houskeeper added a career-high 18 and Dan Conway scored 16.

Berry scored three straight baskets to start the second half, but he was whistled for his fourth foul early in the second half. After he was benched, the Aggies went on a 13-6 surge.

UNLV 92, Pacific 67--Clint Rossum scored 17 points, and Karl James added 16 as the fourth-ranked Rebels rolled past the Tigers at Las Vegas.

The Rebels (19-1, 8-1) came alive in the final six minutes of the first half, outscoring Pacific, 20-6, for a 49-29 halftime lead.

Domingo Rosario scored 24 points for Pacific (5-14, 0-9).
