Soccer : Dana Hills Boys Upset Mission Viejo, 1-0
The Dana Hills High School boys’ soccer team upset Mission Viejo, the top-ranked 3-A Division team in Orange County, with a 1-0 victory Wednesday at Mission Viejo.
Scott Smith scored midway through the first half and the Dolphins managed to hold off Mission Viejo the rest of the way. Goalie Jeff Duvall had three saves for Dana Hills (7-5-3, 2-3-2).
The loss was the first in South Coast League play for Mission Viejo (15-5-1, 5-1-1), ranked second--behind Diamond Bar--in the Southern Section 3-A by the Southern California High School Soccer Coaches’ Assn. The Diablos remain in first place in the South Coast League, one game ahead of Capistrano Valley.
In another South Coast League match:
Capistrano Valley 3, Irvine 0--Mike Gilmore scored the first two goals, both on assists from Steve DeLaura, for host Capistrano Valley (15-6-3, 4-2-1). Tony Blate scored the third goal. Goalie Shane Brosnan had four saves for Irvine (5-7-2, 2-4-1).
In the Century League:
Villa Park 4, Santa Ana Valley 2--Derrick Ujicki scored two goals and teammates Ritchie Skinner and Nick Freck each added one for Villa Park (15-6-1, 5-1-1) at Santa Ana Valley.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 3, Cypress 0--Darin Hicks, Larry Queen and Glen Powers scored for the Golden Hawks (9-5-1, 4-2-1) at El Dorado.
Katella 1, Los Alamitos 1--Sean Park scored in the first half for Los Alamitos and Al Flores tied the score in the second half for host Katella (10-1-7, 3-0-4). Los Alamitos is 3-2-2 in league.
In the Garden Grove League:
Kennedy 4, Pacifica 0--Host Kennedy wrapped up the league title with its ninth league shutout. Diego Abbes scored the first two goals for Kennedy (14-2-3, 11-0-1) and Sal Rios and Mark Piening also scored. Pacifica is 5-4-3 in league play.
La Quinta 4, Garden Grove 1--Chuck Woo had two goals and Grant Schuster and Chris Doherty scored one each for host La Quinta (8-8-3, 5-5-2). Garden Grove scored on Rhett Skinner’s penalty kick.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Costa Mesa 2, Woodbridge 1--Costa Mesa (2-15-0, 1-10-0) won its first league game since December 1985, on Matt Martinez’s goal with 10 minutes left. Costa Mesa’s Ryan Giles scored in the first half to give the Mustangs a 1-0 halftime lead, but John Ray tied the score for host Woodbridge (7-9-1, 5-7-0) early in the second half.
In the Sea View League:
Saddleback 1, Corona del Mar 0--Beto Zavala’s goal late in the first half was the only score that host Saddleback (13-5-2, 5-1-1) needed.
Newport Harbor 0, Estancia 0--The scoreless tie kept host Newport Harbor (10-4-4, 3-1-3) in third place in the league and Estancia (11-4-5, 3-0-4) in second place.
University 3, Tustin 1--Matt Hardy’s first-half goal gave host Tustin a 1-0 halftime lead, but Chad Fullmer, Kevin Kynoch and Adrian Arellano all scored in the second half for University (4-9-2, 1-4-2).
In a girls’ Orange League match:
Brea-Olinda 2, Valencia 0--Brea-Olinda’s Elice Crowder scored four minutes into the first half and Lisa Fey added another goal in the second half for the league-leading Wildcats (8-2-4, 5-0-1) at Valencia (8-5-1, 3-1-1).
