Shapcott Sisters Lead USIU to Fifth in Golf Tournament

Sisters Susan and Allison Shapcott led United States International University to a fifth-place finish Wednesday in the Yamaha-USC Invitational golf tournament at Industry Hills Golf Club.

USIU finished 44 strokes behind tournament champion San Jose State (944). No. 1-ranked Tulsa took second and Arizona State finished third. San Diego State finished 11th at 1,023.

Susan Shapcott shot an 83 in the final round and finished the 54-hole event with a 239, good for seventh. Her sister also shot an 83 and ended up 13th with a 243. Michiki Hattori of Texas was medalist with a final round of 76 and three-round total of 226.

FOOTBALL

Two more San Diego County high school players made college commitments Wednesday, and a former Arizona tight end said he has decided to transfer to San Diego State.

Brent Woodall, a 6-foot 4-inch, 225-pound linebacker from La Jolla High School, said he has joined teammate Brad Raulston in making an oral commitment to attend California. Woodall, a member of The Times’ All-County team, said he selected Cal over Arizona.

Melvin Maxwell, a 5-10, 150-pound receiver/defensive back from Morse, said he will sign with Weber State.

Jim Hanawalt, a tight end who played as a freshman at Arizona in 1986 but quit before the start of the 1987 season and is attending a community college, will enroll at SDSU, said Tim Salem, an assistant coach at Phoenix College.

Salem said Hanawalt did not play at Phoenix College last fall and has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Hanawalt, who was listed as a 6-5, 217-pound freshman by Arizona, was expected to contend for the starting job last season. But when the Wildcats switched to a combination wishbone and run-and-shoot offense that would rarely use the tight end, Hanawalt decided to transfer, Salem said.
