TV Sports Rundown
The XV Winter Olympic Games arrive on ABC amid full fanfare this weekend, including coverage of the opening ceremony from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
ABC kicks off two weeks of coverage today with a 2 1/2-hour broadcast of the opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. (7)(3)(10)(42). In prime time, the network will carry two hockey games from 8-11 p.m. as the United States faces Austria and the Soviet Union plays Norway.
On Sunday, ABC will report on Alpine skiing, ski jumping and the luge from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., followed by coverage of speed skating, figure skating and ski jumping from 7-11 p.m.
Frank and Kathie Lee Gifford will host a nightly half-hour wrap-up of each day’s events, the first airing Sunday at 11:30 p.m.
Besides the Olympics, there are other televised attractions.
Sunday will bring three basketball games featuring the local teams: UCLA vs. Notre Dame at 10 a.m. (4)(36)(39), the Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers at 12:30 p.m. (2)(8) and the Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Clippers at 7 p.m. (5).
At the top of today’s basketball schedule is the Syracuse-Georgetown game at 11 a.m. on CBS (2)(8). NBC counters with the Louisville-North Carolina State contest at noon (4)(36)(39).
Elsewhere, NBC follows the final rounds of Hawaiian Golf Open today at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (4)(36)(39).
In auto racing, the 30th running of NASCAR’s Daytona 500 gets the green flag Sunday at 9 a.m. (2)(8).
