40 Rebels Killed, Mozambique Reports

MAPUTO, Mozambique — Government troops killed 40 rebels and accepted the surrender of 10 others during operations in three provinces this week, Mozambique’s official AIM news agency reported Friday.
It said the latest surrenders brought to 79 the number of rebels who have taken advantage of an amnesty declared in December.
The right-wing Mozambique National Resistance began fighting against Mozambique’s Marxist government soon after the country achieved independence from Portugal in 1975.
