Clippers Waive Guard Lancaster Gordon

The Clippers finally gave up on guard Lancaster Gordon, their top draft pick in 1984.

The Clippers on Friday waived Gordon, who was in the final season of a four-year, $1.5-million contract that paid him $400,000 this season. The Clippers will have to pay him for the final two months of the season.

Gordon underwent knee surgery last summer and averaged just 3.5 points in eight games after he was activated last month. He averaged 5.6 points in 201 games with the club.

“It’s obvious that I haven’t played the way they wanted me to. I could see it coming,” Gordon said. “I don’t know what my plans are. I think I’m going to take some time to get my knee stronger because I think I can still play.”

The Clippers also made several other roster moves Friday, placing rookie center Martin Nesley on the injured list with a lower back sprain and activating rookie swingman Reggie Williams, who has been sidelined for the last seven weeks with a knee injury.

Williams, who has been playing forward, will be used at point guard in tonight’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Sports Arena.

Forward Kenny Fields, a former UCLA star who played for the Clippers last season, is expected to join the club tonight. Fields was a free agent at the end of last season and was unable to reach an agreement with the Clippers. He had been playing for Rochester (Minn.) in the Continental Basketball Assn.
