League Raises $100,000 for Debates
The League of Women Voters has raised nearly $100,000 to partially cover the cost of sponsoring two nationally televised presidential candidate debates in Torrance the weekend before California’s June 7 primary.
The separate debates for Democratic and Republican presidential contenders, to be held June 4 and 5 at El Camino College, will be the last in a series of league-sponsored events before the major party presidential conventions this summer.
TRW, as a major contributor of $15,000 in cash and in-kind services, will act as honorary co-chairman of the local debates.
Mobil Oil has given $10,000, and American Honda, Fetzer Vineyards, GTE California, Oxford-Computax Associates, Pioneer Theaters and Toyota Motor Sales, USA, each contributed $5,000.
“We believe every employer, large or small, and every member of the community will want to be a part of this historic event in the South Bay,” said Charlotte Lobb, the league’s local finance coordinator.
Although almost $100,000 has been raised, the goal for the Torrance debates is $250,000. Tax-deductible contributions may be sent to League of Women Voters Education Fund--’88 Debates, 1328 Amapola Ave., Torrance 90501. For more information, call the League at 320-JUNE.
