Suspected Tamil rebels blew up a truck in eastern Sri Lanka and killed at least 26 hitchhikers, military officials said. A land mine exploded under the truck near the port city of Trincomalee and “as many as 19 people died on the spot and seven in hospitals,” an army colonel said. Nine women and two children were among the victims, most of whom were Sinhalese. No one claimed responsibility, but military officials blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the most powerful Tamil rebel group.
