South African church leaders, vowing to maintain their campaign against apartheid despite a government gag on black opposition groups, called for a church protest meeting in Soweto on March 12. The meeting will focus on racially divided South Africa’s “deepening crisis” and on dissidents jailed without charge, said the Rev. Frank Chikane, head of the South African Council of Churches. Meanwhile, Namibian nationalist guerrillas said they killed 11 South African troops in separate clashes last week in northern Namibia.
