Job Training Scholarships
Six women students at Rio Hondo Community College have been granted occupational training scholarships by the Whittier Soroptimist Club. The first-place winner of a $1,000 scholarship is Bonnie Jensen, who is studying oncology nursing and plans to transfer to a four-year university. Her name will be entered in further scholarship competition at the regional level of Soroptimist International. Other winners and the amounts of their grants in the Training Awards Program are: Karen Damron, $500; Darlene Dominquez, $500; Kathryn Pico, $200; Martha Lafayette, $200; and Renee Smith, $100. All are involved in training for entry or re-entry into the job market and are heads of households. Scholarship selection was done by a committee headed by Soroptimist member Olive Neiheiser and assisted by Delta Murphy and Victor Lopez, both former mayors of Whittier.
