The Montebello Police Assn. has started a trust fund for the five children of a Montebello man who drowned last weekend in the Rio Hondo river.

Francisco Navarro Lopez, 37, was picnicking with his wife, Ampara, and their children in the Whittier Narrows Dam area last Sunday when he waded into the channel to try to catch fish, authorities said. Lopez, who did not know how to swim, entered deep water and drowned, said Montebello police Detective Ralph Newcomb, who is vice president of the Police Assn. Lopez was a car washer at an automobile dealership.

“The mother has absolutely no means of support,” Newcomb said. “They share an apartment with another family. They just live day to day.”

Newcomb said anyone wishing to donate should make checks payable to Francisco Lopez Trust Fund and send them to Gibraltar Savings, 866 N. Wilcox Ave., Montebello, Calif. 90640.
