Prep Baseball : Orange Lutheran Beats Capistrano Valley

Tim McCann drove in Rick Gress in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Orange Lutheran High School a 7-6 victory over Capistrano Valley in the third-place game of the Bolsa Grande tournament Wednesday at Orange Lutheran.

Gress had opened the inning with an infield hit, then moved to third on an error by Capistrano Valley shortstop Bill Barndes. McCann then hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Capistrano Valley (5-8) had tied the score with two out in the seventh on a single by David Rawson. Rawson was 2 for 4 with 2 runs batted in.

Gress was 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs. He also had a three-run homer in the second.

Kent Dowding pitched five innings in relief for the victory. Dowding (5-1) struck out three and allowed only one earned run.

Orange Lutheran is 12-4.

In the fifth-place game:

Estancia 7, Leuzinger 3--Dave Westman went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and a 430-foot two-run home run for Estancia (9-4) at Bolsa Grande. Pitcher Clayton Nelson (1-0) got the victory, striking out five and giving up five hits in three innings.

In consolation play:

Rancho Alamitos 7, Lynwood 6 (8 innings)--Danny Lopez doubled home Paul Mendoza with one out in the eighth for Rancho Alamitos. Ryan Flanagan (3-0) went the distance, striking out eight, for the victory. Kevin Schnabel had a home run and two RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (6-6).

Santiago 13, Dominguez 9--Enrique Britto and Adrian Borbon each had three hits and two RBIs for Santiago (4-9) at Los Amigos High School.

Costa Mesa 10, Newport Harbor 4--The Mustangs had 11 hits, including three by first baseman Greg Ertel, to improve their record to 7-6. Ertel hit a home run and drove in four runs and Scott Snedeker (3-2) pitched four innings for the victory. Newport Harbor is 3-10.

Bolsa Grande 8, Los Amigos 1--Winning pitcher Eric Schreifels (2-4) struck out nine, gave up three hits and no earned runs for Bolsa Grande (4-8, 1-1) at Los Amigos. Schreifels, who has not given up an earned run in 18 innings, also went 3 for 4 with a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Los Amigos is 4-9, 0-2.

In the first round of the San Luis Obispo tournament:

Ocean View 4, San Francisco Lowell 1--Steve Hernandez went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs to lead Ocean View (7-3-1) at Sinsheimer Park in San Luis Obispo. Brent Wooten (1-0) went six innings, allowing only three hits, for the victory. D.J. Andrews also drove in a run for Ocean View.

In nonleague play:

Katella 7-5, Anaheim 5-8--In the first game at Boysen Park, Alan Acosta singled home two runs in the bottom of the fifth to give Katella a lead it never relinquished. Acosta was 2 for 4. Dan Kiker (2-2) pitched five innings, allowing three runs, for the victory. Luis Medina was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Anaheim. In the second game, Robert Fernandez went the distance, striking out eight, for Anaheim. Fernandez allowed only one earned run. Joe Young went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs for Anaheim. Jeremey Sherman went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored for Katella (6-6).
