Koppers Co., a chemical and construction company, won a major courtroom victory against an investment partnership’s $1.7-billion bid. The preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Manuel Real of Los Angeles will succeed a restraining order he issued on March 25 that temporarily halted the hostile $60-a-share bid by BNS Inc., owned by British industrialist Brian Beazer and Shearson Lehman Hutton Inc. Beazer is chairman of Beazer PLC, a general construction and construction materials company. Koppers claimed that a takeover would cause an overlap of construction materials operations between the two companies in Southern California, where it has about $250 million in assets.
