Joan Benoit, winner of the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984, is not expected to run in the May 1 trials for the 1988 Games, her coach said.
Bob Sevene said that Benoit “blew her back out about eight weeks ago, and she has had this long-range problem with her hip, where there’s an imbalance that affects her left side.”
