The Irvine Co. has announced that it will donate $1,000 to each of 12 high schools in Orange County sponsoring safety-conscious graduation parties this year.

The high schools receiving the grants are Irvine, University and Woodbridge, all in Irvine; Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor in Newport Beach; Estancia and Costa Mesa in Costa Mesa; Canyon in Anaheim; Villa Park; Foothill High and Tustin in Tustin, and Laguna Beach.

“In its ongoing commitment to local youth, the Irvine Co. has chosen to support Grad Night ’88 and its alcohol-free and drug-free events for graduating seniors,” Thomas H. Nielsen, vice chairman of the company, said Wednesday.

Grad Night parties are those usually held on the school grounds under all-night supervision of parents and teachers. Games, booths, music and food are provided. Lori Warmington of Newport Beach, president of the Grad Night Foundation, noted that such parties are designed to prevent fatal accidents.

“We hope to get all Orange County high schools participating in Grad Night activities, and then extend the program statewide,” Warmington said.
