HIGH LIFE : 6 County Students Picked for Special Arts Training

Six county students will receive intensive training in the arts as part of the California State Summer School for the Arts program.

The students, who were selected to participate in the statewide program after an audition, will attend Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles for a month of training in July.

They are: Shane Cooper of El Dorado High School (creative writing), Rebecca Cummings of Irvine High (visual arts), Nadina Fernandez of El Dorado High (dance), David Jacob of El Modena High (visual arts) and Erin Lander of Woodbridge High (theater arts).

Also selected was Jenny Cates of Yorba Junior High in Placentia (dance).

Estancia High School,for the third consecutive year, took Best Production honors in the Saddleback College High School Theater Festival on April 22. Estancia’s “The Dining Room” beat out 10 other Orange County school productions.

Acting awards went to Chris Allen (St. Margaret’s), Deborah Cook and Marcus Wallburger (Estancia), Randy Helm (San Clemente) and Stacy Hamblin (El Modena). The crew of San Clemente’s “The Actor’s Nightmare” won best technical honors.

Patrick Meany,a 17-year-old senior at Foothill High School, has been named 1988’s international foreign youth exchange ambassador to West Germany by the Orange County 4-H. He will participate in a class called “Market to Market: German Style” for six weeks while living with a West German host family.

Knott’s Berry Farm will play host to Frisbee throwing, three-legged racing and eight other events in the second Battle of the High School Superstars competition May 14.

Teams of 10 students, each representing an area high school, will compete for trophies and cash, including a $1,000 first prize, $500 second and $250 third. Hesperia High is expected to return to defend its title against more than 30 high schools.

Any high school in Southern California is eligible to enter a team in the competition. Participants, their families and supporters will be offered a special discounted Knott’s admission price of $11. Discount coupons will be available at participating schools.
