College Roundup : Brink Tosses Complete Game, UC Irvine Beats Las Vegas, 6-1
Craig Brink pitched the 23rd complete game of his college career Friday night as UC Irvine defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 6-1, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game in Las Vegas.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for Irvine (27-26-1 overall, 6-10 in the PCAA).
Brink (8-5), a senior right-hander, allowed nine hits, struck out seven and walked none. He gave up three hits in the first inning, but didn’t allow more than one baserunner per inning the rest of the way.
Doug Kline had three hits, including his fifth home run of the season, and three RBIs for Irvine. Don Nicholson had a home run for the Anteaters.
Dave Sturdivant had an RBI single in the first inning for Las Vegas (34-15, 11-5).
Scott Lewis (10-4) gave up five runs in six-plus innings and took the loss.
In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 9, Chapman 3--Host San Luis Obispo (23-23, 12-11) scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Rich Shepperd hit a two-run homer in the inning and Pat Kirby added a two-run double. Lee Hancock (6-8) threw a four-hitter, striking out 11, for the victory. Brian Beals had two hits and scored twice for Chapman (23-21-1, 12-10).
In the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s tennis championships:
UC Irvine 27, UC Santa Barbara 25, CS Long Beach 21--All nine Irvine entries advanced to today’s semifinals, including defending singles champion Trevor Kronemann, who defeated New Mexico State’s Jan Swensk, 6-3, 6-4. Richard Lubner of Irvine defeated Utah State’s Dave Pigott, 6-1, 6-4.
Mike Briggs of Irvine defeated Jay Schneir of the University of the Pacific, 6-1, 6-1. Shige Kanroji of Irvine defeated Yuto Tusnoda of Nevada Las Vegas, 6-1, 6-4. Mike Cadigan of Irvine defeated Terry Chambers of Pacific, 6-0, 6-1.
