COMMENCEMENT 1988

Loma Linda University, which will hold seven graduations over a two-week period, began with ceremonies Sunday for the School of Medicine where degrees were conferred on 986 students.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. William C. DeVries, artificial heart pioneer, regarding artificial heart machines and related technology, said, “We hang our hope on these machines, we build into them our own aspirations. The pioneering work that has gone into the development of these devices has produced heroes--heroes who were willing to suffer, and even die, in the hope of advancing knowledge that would help others. We must keep faith with those heroes.” Paraphrasing Henry Ford’s book “My Philosophy of Industry,” Dr. DeVries said: “The secret of a successful life is to find out what your destiny is and do it. If you are right, don’t be afraid to stand alone; for you are never really alone.”

Other Graduations:

Whittier College held its 85th commencement Sunday. Francis Dale, president of the Music Center of Los Angeles County, spoke. Honorary degrees were awarded to Dale, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Prof. Joseph W. Elder, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Stuart E. Gothold, Whittier College Trustee R. Chandler Myers and environmental writer and lecturer Barry Lopez. Nearly 200 undergraduate degrees, 30 master’s degrees and 104 juris doctorate degrees were awarded.

Mt. St. Mary’s College featured a speech by journalist Mary Ann Dolan at its 59th commencement Sunday. Degrees were conferred on 243 students, including 33 who received master’s degrees.
