Yugoslav Communist Party leader Bosko Krunic called for a purge of corruption and thievery in the party as he opened a three-day conference. “Radical changes, in the functioning of the League (party) of Communists, require a radical purge of manifestations (of corruption) or those responsible for them,” Krunic said. “Indifference toward thievery, immorality and dishonesty is not permissible.” The conference opened against a backdrop of worker unrest, 170% inflation and a wave of corruption scandals. Krunic, who will step down in June from his one-year term as president, also spoke of the need for rejuvenation of the political ranks.
