Two graduate students in the anthropology department at USC--whose documentary film, “Gang Cops,” detailed the failing relationships between gang members and the police--were awarded this year’s student Oscar for best documentary by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Daniel Marks, 25, and Toby Fleming, 27, spent nearly two years with the County Sheriff’s special gang unit in South Central Los Angeles researching and filming their 30-minute documentary. The award will be presented June 12 at the academy in Beverly Hills.
