Steinway & Sons celebrated its 135th anniversary of piano making Thursday by unveiling its 500,000th piano and inviting Vladimir Horowitz and 24 other leading pianists to perform at Carnegie Hall using, of course, Steinway’s latest creation. The one-of-a-kind anniversary concert grand, created by furniture designer Wendell Castle and featuring the signatures of 900 living pianists who use Steinway instruments, will be sent on a world tour. Thursday’s performance is scheduled to be televised at a later date.
