Local News in Brief : Tustin : School Trustee Named to Nutrition Council
Gloria Tuchman, a Tustin Unified School District trustee, has been named to the federal government’s National Advisory Council on Child Nutrition.
One of 19 persons in the nation serving on the panel, Tuchman is in Arlington, Va., today to attend her first meeting of the advisory group. The council annually makes a report to the President and the Congress on how children may get better and more nutritious food.
Tuchman was appointed to the group by John W. Bode, assistant secretary for food and consumer services for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Bode named Tuchman as the panel’s member representing all the nation’s school boards.
Tuchman has served on the Tustin Unified school board since 1985. She is also a teacher in the adjoining Santa Ana Unified School District. Last November, she was named by Education Secretary William Bennett to the National Advisory Council for Bilingual Education.
Tuchman said in an interview Monday that she hopes to improve nationwide programs for school lunches during her tenure on the council. “Those who’ve ever eaten a school lunch know there’s much room for improvement,” she said.
