Roman Catholics in central Vietnam have been told not to celebrate the Vatican’s canonization today of Vietnamese martyrs, which Hanoi has condemned as politically motivated, Radio Hanoi said. Pope John Paul II is to preside over the canonization of 117 martyrs of the 18th and 19th centuries, the largest in church history, in the Vatican. Thousands of Vietnamese, many of whom fled their Communist homeland, are expected to attend, and Hanoi fears it will become an anti-Communist rally.
