Local News in Brief : Bomb With Trip Wire Discovered in Park
An explosive device was removed from a Glendale park by the Los Angeles County sheriff’s bomb squad Wednesday morning, shortly after it was discovered by a bus driver and reported to authorities by the park caretaker.
The device, in a small wooden box, was “rigged with a trip wire” tied to a nearby flagpole, said Glendale Police Sgt. Dean Durand. It was set up to explode when the wire was stepped on, he said.
The bomb squad, which removed the device from Glenoaks Park in the 2500 block of East Glenoaks Boulevard, later classified it as “a giant firecracker,” said Durand.
If the device had exploded with someone nearby, it could have caused serious injury, said Durand. Glendale police are investigating the case but have no suspects, he said.
