SportsScope : Cal State Names Interim Athletic Director

Cal State Los Angeles has selected Carol Dunn, assistant athletic director and former women’s basketball coach, as its interim athletic director.

Dunn replaces Dennis Keihn, who resigned to become athletic director at Northeastern Illinois in Chicago. Dunn will manage a program that has eight men’s and six women’s teams and about 300 athletes.

A graduate of Frostburg State in Maryland, Dunn has also been director of the physical education department at Kansas Newman in Wichita. Women’s basketball coach at Cal State from 1982 through 1985, Dunn is a member of the NCAA postgraduate scholarship committee and California Collegiate Athletic Assn. executive committee.

Workouts for the 37th annual Shrine All-Star High School Football Game will start July 15 at Azusa Pacific University and Cal State Northridge.

The South team, which includes three standouts from the San Gabriel Valley, will train at Azusa Pacific and the North squad at Northridge. The game on July 23 at the Rose Bowl matches 64 of the top graduated seniors from Southern and Northern California.

Among South players are defensive back Stephon Pace from Bishop Amat of La Puente, interior lineman Rick Fuller from Arroyo of El Monte and defensive lineman Bascom Mellon of Diamond Bar.

Cal State Los Angeles junior tennis standout Candace Wong, who helped lead the Golden Eagles to fifth place in the NCAA Division II championships in May, has been named to the academic All-American team selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.

A three-year letterman after competing at Alhambra High, Wong has a 3.89 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. She was selected the team’s most inspirational player in 1986.
