Eighth-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria narrowly escaped elimination, surviving a 2-hour 18-minute match with Jimmy Arias, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
Jimmy Connors breezed past Australian John Frawley, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round of the Gunze World Championships at Yokohama, Japan.
In another men’s match, Tim Mayotte rallied to beat Mark Woodforde of Australia, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Etsuko Inoue, the No. 1 women’s player in Japan, defeated Melissa Gurney, 6-2, 6-3.
