Local News in Brief : Deadlock in Malibu Vote
A tentative proposal by the Board of Supervisors Thursday to set the Malibu incorporation measure for a November election was delayed indefinitely after the board deadlocked on a 2-2 vote.
The motion by Supervisor Ed Edelman died after his colleagues Deane Dana and Pete Schabarum, two staunch advocates of a plan to place a regional sewer system in Malibu, refused to back the proposal. Mike Antonovich sided with Edelman and Kenneth Hahn was absent.
Supervisors must hold a hearing by Aug. 11 to qualify the measure for the November ballot. Schabarum has said he will try to delay a vote on cityhood until March to allow the county to proceed with sewer plans for the area.
The Local Agency Formation Commission on Wednesday rejected the county’s request to allow the county to retain jurisdiction over sewers and landslide assessment districts, even if Malibu votes to become a city. County supervisors have been attempting to place a sewer system there for more than two decades.
