POLITICS ’88 : CAMPAIGN ’88 : Nixon Backs Bush-Dole
Former President Richard M. Nixon said that Vice President George Bush should look to Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, his former rival for the Republican presidential nomination, as a running mate.
Even if Bush and Dole have their differences, Nixon said, they’re “Siamese twins” compared to the designated Democratic ticket.
Nixon, in a memo prepared for Bush advisers, pointed to three GOP vice presidential possibilities: Dole, Rep. Jack Kemp of New York or California Gov. George Deukmejian.
A copy of the former President’s three-page note was provided to the Associated Press. Nixon spokesman John Taylor confirmed that Nixon wrote it for Bush’s “key strategists.”
