Bomb Explodes Before Italy Leader’s Meeting
ROME — A bomb in a trash can exploded Thursday near the offices of the Italian Magistrates Council less than four hours before a meeting attended by President Francesco Cossiga.
A garbage man who was about to empty the can suffered cuts and burns in the blast in Rome’s Independence Square, police said. The meeting went on as scheduled.
No one claimed responsibility for the device. However, police sources said the blast may have been linked to life sentences imposed Monday on four neo-fascists who bombed the Bologna railway station in 1980, killing 85 people.
