City Section All-Stars Fall to San Diego, 17-14
SAN DIEGO — Tim Walker of Torrey Pines High kicked a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to give the San Diego Section a 17-14 victory over the City Section in the College Prep all-star football game before an estimated crowd of 5,000 at Mesa Community College on Saturday night.
The City had tied the score, 14-14, with 4:32 remaining and was in position to win the game after a 16-yard punt gave it the ball at the San Diego 33. But on the first play, Derrick Duren of Gardena fumbled and Sam Cooper recovered for San Diego to set up the winning kick.
San Diego took a 14-6 lead with 9:44 to play in the third quarter when Walker, the offensive player of the game, scored from two yards. Walker set up the score, taking a screen pass from Stokes 31 yards to the City’s 4-yard line on a third-and-9 play.
Early in the fourth quarter, San Diego had an opportunity to put the game away. Freddie Spears of El Camino intercepted a pass from Granada Hills’ Jeremy Leach at the City 39, but on San Diego’s first play, Mario Hull of Cleveland returned the favor, picking off a pass and bringing it back 30 yards to the City 45.
From there, the City mounted a drive that would tie the game.
Leach used 6 1/2 minutes to complete the scoring march, hitting Granada Hills teammate Kyle Jan with a 2-yard scoring pass. A holding penalty erased the play, but after two incompletions, Leach found Hull for a touchdown.
On the extra-point attempt, Jan, the holder, picked up a low snap, rolled right and found Kevin Carmichael just behind two San Diego defenders. His catch tied the score with 4:32 to play.
San Diego led 7-6 after a penalty-filled first half.
