Nine Hospitalized After Chemical Leak
SAUGET, Ill. — The second leak of a noxious chemical in 3 1/2 months from a Monsanto Chemical Co. plant sent more than 120 people to hospitals, and at least nine were admitted, although none had serious injuries, officials said.
The leak Sunday of less than 3 gallons of phosphorous trichloride was plugged within five minutes, and no evacuation was ordered, a company spokeswoman said.
On April 17, a 22-square-block area of neighboring East St. Louis was evacuated when about 250 gallons of the substance spilled during loading onto a railroad tank car, officials have said.
