American League Roundup : Canseco Hits No. 31 as A’s Beat White Sox
Jose Canseco homered in his fourth straight game, and Dave Henderson drove in four runs with a homer and a single, as the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox, 10-2, Monday night at Chicago.
Canseco’s two-run homer in the first inning was his fifth in the last four games and his major league-leading 31st of the season, matching his total of last year and two short of his total as a rookie in 1986. He also leads the majors with 86 runs batted in.
The victory, coupled with the Minnesota Twins’ loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, increased Oakland’s lead in the American League West to 6 1/2 games.
Todd Burns (4-0) had a four-hit shutout going into the sixth when Steve Lyons singled and scored on a double by Harold Baines. Baines then scored on successive balks. Burns also balked in the fourth inning, giving the A’s staff a major league-leading total of 65.
Toronto 3, Minnesota 1--George Bell hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning at Toronto as the Blue Jays beat the Twins and spoiled Frank Viola’s bid to become the majors’ first 17-game winner.
Viola (16-4) was relieved with two outs in the eighth after giving up consecutive singles to Tony Fernandez and Manny Lee. Bell hit his 15th home run of the season off Jeff Reardon.
Kansas City 5, Detroit 3--Bo Jackson homered for the third straight game, and Willie Wilson scored once and drove in a run to lift the Royals past the Tigers at Kansas City, Mo. The loss cut Detroit’s lead in the East to a half-game over the idle New York Yankees.
