Anglican church leaders attending a conference in Canterbury, England, overwhelmingly accepted a joint Anglican-Roman Catholic report intended to pave the way for greater unity with Rome. The report by the second Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission resolves a disagreement over the doctrine of salvation that dates back to the 16th-Century Reformation, the revolt against Rome led by Martin Luther. It agrees with Luther that salvation is basically God’s gift but says men and women also have a role to play. The Vatican is due to give its response later this year.
