The 16-city overnight ratings for the three commercial networks’ coverage of the first night of the GOP convention were about 4% higher than for opening night of the Democratic convention last month, ratings figures showed Tuesday. CBS research vice president Michael Eisenberg attributes the increase to viewer interest in the appearances of President and Nancy Reagan at the Republican convention on Monday night. ABC led the GOP-coverage ratings race with a 7.8 rating, followed by NBC with a 6.9. CBS was far behind with a 5.8 rating average in the 16-city count, which includes Los Angeles.
