The Beach Boys learned a lesson in geography when they performed at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. The band’s current hit “Kokomo” extols the pleasures found in a tropical paradise. But the real Kokomo, they were informed, is a land-locked auto industry town about 50 miles north of Indianapolis. “Kokomo” is one cut on the sound track to the movie “Cocktail.” The single, released about eight weeks ago, is climbing the adult-contemporary chart, reaching No. 11 this week. The Beach Boys said they thought they were singing of a make-believe place. “It was just made-up ... it was a nice-sounding name,” singer Mike Love said. “The writer is John Phillips (formerly of the Mamas and Papas). He started it and it wouldn’t stop; it was out of control.”
