Plans for Big Hotel OKd for Downtown
An agreement to proceed with plans to build a major hotel in Glendale’s downtown redevelopment zone was signed by an official of Red Lion Inns on Tuesday and sent by wire just hours before a city deadline lapsed.
Jerold F. Milner, chairman of the Glendale Redevelopment Agency, waved the agreement at the start of the agency’s session Tuesday, saying, “This is a red-letter day for Glendale!”
City redevelopment officials and hotel representatives worked through the weekend to complete the deal, said H. Raymond Bingham, chief financial officer of the hotel chain, based in Vancouver.
Negotiations reportedly dragged on for weeks because of the complexity of the development agreement and a late proposal by the developer to increase the size of the 350-room project.
The $36-million project, to be built on the south side of Glenoaks Boulevard between Central Avenue and Brand Boulevard, would include space for large banquets and conferences. The city has no such facilities.
The development agreement still must be approved after a joint public hearing of the City Council and Redevelopment Agency.
An environmental impact report on the hotel project was deemed adequate Tuesday by agency members.
